Differential picks: when they work, when they don’t, and how to use them

What a differential pick is

A differential pick is a selection owned by fewer than five per cent of fantasy entries in the public contests. The differential pick’s value is the gap between its ownership and its ceiling. If the differential scores above its expected output, the owner of the differential ranks above the field that did not pick the differential.

A differential pick is not a wildcard. A wildcard is a selection the manager believes is undervalued. A differential is a selection the manager believes is undervalued AND is owned by very few managers. The two conditions are not the same.

When a differential works

A differential works when the role is locked, the recent usage is consistent and the conditions favour the player. The role has to be locked because a rotating role means the player’s minutes are uncertain, and uncertain minutes kill the ceiling.

A differential also works when the alternative picks in the same slot are owned by a high percentage of the public contest. If the alternative picks are at 30 per cent ownership and the differential is at 4 per cent ownership, the manager who picks the differential gains a ranking advantage only if the differential outperforms the alternatives.

When a differential does not work

A differential does not work when the role is rotating, even if the player’s recent scores look good. A rotating role means the player’s minutes are uncertain. Uncertain minutes mean the player’s ceiling is capped. A capped ceiling kills the differential value.

A differential also does not work when the alternative picks in the same slot are at low ownership. If the alternative picks are at 5 per cent ownership and the differential is at 4 per cent ownership, the ranking advantage from picking the differential is small.

The desk’s approach

The desk uses differentials sparingly. In a 15-player fantasy team, the desk carries no more than two differentials in any given contest. The desk’s view is that differentials are the highest-variance selection in the team and the variance has to be balanced by a stable base of high-floor picks.

The desk also does not pick differentials for the sake of differentiation. The desk picks differentials when the supporting evidence — role, usage, match-up, conditions — points to a player who happens to be at low ownership. The ownership is the second condition, not the first.

How to read the differential pick list

The differential pick list on the fantasy desk is updated weekly. Each pick carries the supporting evidence alongside. If the evidence changes — if the role rotates, if the conditions change — the pick is removed from the list.

A pick that has been on the list for two consecutive weeks is a stronger pick than a pick that has just been added. The two-week tenure is the desk’s signal that the supporting evidence has held up across two sets of conditions.
